Better Letters has brought together a series of demonstrations, talks, and a screening for this year’s online edition of the annual ATypI conference, ‘All Over 2020‘. The event runs over five days, 27–31 October, and registration to access all areas is a bargain at $48. Check out the full agenda here, and look out for our six sessions as follows:

1. Introduction to Fileteado Porteño

In this session Gustavo will present a brief history of this vernacular art form from Buenos Aires, Argentina. This will tell the story of how it evolved from humble beginnings as decoration for food carts, to its recognition as an Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity by UNESCO Gustavo will follow this with a live demonstration of the technique focusing on its lettering elements by creating a custom AtypI piece. 2. Light Capsules and Lettering Projection Mapping

This talk and live demonstration will overview the Light Capsules project, providing a dive into the process behind restoration efforts using new technologies to revive ghost signs using projection mapping and augmented reality. Demonstration will focus on different processes used when finding hidden layers within palimpsest faded ads, and using Adobe Illustrator to vectorize layers based on historical imagery. 3. When Better Letters Met Barbara Enright

‘When Better Letters Met…’ is a series of short films celebrating the lives and work of retired sign painters and lettering artists. In this, the fourth in the series, we profile Australian showcard and ticket writer Barbara Enright. The film will be followed by a live Q+A with Barbara. [ATypI Event Listing.]

4. A to A – Time travel with the Letter A from Hieroglyphs to Modern Graffiti

5. Sign Painting Demonstration

In this session Mike will be setting out and painting a bespoke AtypI All Over 2020 piece, using a variety of basic sign painting techniques. As he goes he’ll be providing a running commentary, and taking questions from those watching. [ATypI Event Listing.]

6. Ghost Sign Stories from London and Beyond

Sam will share some highlights from his 14 years of documenting and researching the fading signs of old on brick walls around the world, including some of the stops on his renowned London walking tours.
