“I feel confident to tackle projects on my own and feel incredibly inspired.” – Sign Painter, MN, USA
This four-day intensive workshop will introduce a variety of gold leaf techniques for those getting started with gilding, or looking to improve their existing skills. Participants will work on four projects (three on glass, one on aluminium) across the four days, all of which can be taken away afterwards.
The projects will include plain, glue-chipped and acid-etched glass panels, and one timber or other substrate panel for surface gilding. Working with a variety of karat weights of gold, and other alloys such as copper and aluminiun, everyone will move through all the projects towards completion on the final day.
Instructors Anne McDonald and Steve Davidson will introduce and demonstrate the processes before guiding participants as they try them out. The following topics will be covered, and there will be a printed fact sheet which can be taken away after the workshop.
- Glass cleaning and preparation;
- Water gilding on glass;
- Surface gilding;
- Creating matte centres on glass;
- Inserting abalone shell;
- Laser cutting, glue chipping, and acid etching;
- Verre eglomise processes;
- Painting enamel blends;
- Creating gold-leaf blends;
- Using damar varnish;
- Backing up using screen printing.
