Better Letters and Ghostsigns are back in the Bankside Design District of the London Design Festival with workshops, a new digital walking tour, and a series of projection installations inspired by ghostsigns.
These events are part of an exciting line-up of lettering and typography at this year’s festival, all of which has been curated into this blog post, with map and itinerary.

Providing a rapid one-day introduction to the traditional craft of signwriting, we’re running two of these in the fabulous Market Hall at Borough Market. Leading the workshop will be the American traveling sign painter, Mike Meyer, who, in the last three years has taught in over 25 cities across three continents. More info…

Led by leading blackboard artist Cheryl McLean, this two-day workshop will equip you with all the skills you need to start creating blackboards that look great and, more importantly, sell clients’ goods. Working with a range of materials, including chalk and paint pens, participants will learn how to create effective layouts in a variety of lettering styles. More info…

Ghostsigns have been running walking tours in London for over two years, with a focus on the fading remains of hand-painted advertising on brick walls. The tours delve into design, advertising, craft and local history, heightening guests’ awareness of the presence of these ghostly forms in the public realm. The tours have received the TripAdvisor Certificate of Excellence two years running and the Bankside Ghostsigns Walk will launch in digital form at the London Design Festival. The geo-located audio tour allows people to experience the tour at at time and pace that suits them, with audio, text and visual content enriching the experience. For those that aren’t mobile, or can’t travel to London, the signs are all photographed for inclusion in the app, allowing an ‘armchair’ experience too!
Evening installations across the Bankside Design District, with a large projection event at The Distillery in Hilton Bankside on 21 September, 8-10pm.
Craig Winslow, Adobe Creative Resident, collaborates with Ghostsigns founder Sam Roberts to apply his Light Capsules project to the ghostsigns of Bankside and Stoke Newington. The work will bring the ghostsigns back to life through the medium of projection mapping. offering a unique approach to engaging with the design heritage present is these historic signs. More info…
