Lettering Rock ‘n’ Roll Workshop
In this two-day workshop Ivan Castro will guide you through the process of designing, by hand, a logotype for a musician/band. The aim will be to successfully develop a piece of work from brief to final logotype, using a variety of lettering and calligraphic techniques introduced across the workshop. Working with the expressive aspects of letters and lettering you will engage in the process of effectively communicating concepts and emotions through your work, all under Ivan’s tutorial guidance.
The project will be modelled on a commercial commission and so you will be assigned the musician/band, rather than choosing it yourself. This will then require some initial research ahead of the workshop, and force you out of your comfort zone as you engage with unfamiliar aesthetic content and considerations.
Who & How Much?
This workshop is suitable for complete beginners and an interest in calligraphy, lettering and/or graphic design and some basic drawing skills (e.g. knowing how to hold a pencil) will be beneficial. For those with some prior experience, the workshop offers the opportunity to work on a tutored project across a weekend, and to develop skills that can be applied in a commercial context for corporate and other clients.
Spaces are £300+VAT and this includes all equipment, lunch and refreshments across the two days.
Ivan Castro is a graphic designer based in Barcelona, Spain, specialising in calligraphy, lettering and typography. His work involves everything from advertising to editorial, packaging and logo design, and from big companies to punk rock gig posters. Even though he claims to have not a specific style, from his work we could say that it has a strong respect for history and popular culture, but with a contemporary, modern twist. He has been working in the field for fifteen years, and teaching calligraphy and lettering for ten years in the main design schools in Barcelona, including BAU, Elisava and La Massana. Ivan travels the world running workshops and lectures and design festivals and conferences. He’s also a tiki, polynesian-pop geek and has recently published The ABC of Custom Lettering, a lettering handbook.
