In this hands-on intensive workshop you will engage with the process of drawing and refining a piece of your own custom lettering. Across the day you will be introduced to a variety of effective techniques to create lettering from scratch, under the guidance of Berlin-based letterer and author, Martina Flor. This will provide the basis for the continuation of your own practise following the workshop.
The workshop is suitable for beginners and those with previous experience who want to improve their techniques for drawing letters. Following the workshop you will leave with a sharper eye when working with typography, and many practical tools to improve your own creative work.
This workshop is part of the 2017 London Design Festival. The fee of £180 includes VAT, all equipment, lunch and refreshments. The same one-day workshop is running twice, on both 23 and 24 September.
Martina Flor combines her talents as designer and illustrator in the drawing of letters. Based in Berlin, she runs a leading studio in lettering and custom typography working for clients around the globe such as The Washington Post, Vanity Fair, Harper Collins, Penguin Random House, Monotype, Etsy, Adobe, Fontshop and Cosmopolitan, among others.
Martina cofounded the online competition Lettering vs. Calligraphy, which garnered a lot of attention, and she has also initiated numerous other noncommercial projects, including Letter Collections, a series of postcards. With a masters in Type Design from the Royal Academy of Art in The Hague under her belt, she dedicates big part of her time to teaching lettering and type design in and outside Europe. Her new book is The Golden Secrets of Lettering (Princeton Architectural Press and Thames & Hudson, 2017).
