John Neilson on Ralph Beyer
18 Oct 2017
UCA Farnham, Farnham
Talk by John Neilson on the letter carver Ralph Beyer.
Beyer was exiled to Britain from Nazi Germany at the age of seventeen. His contacts with Eric Gill, Henry Moore, Nikolaus Pevsner and others laid the foundation of a career as a letter carver in stone in which he developed a unique voice, as can be seen in his largest commission, the eight huge ‘Tablets of the Word’ in Coventry cathedral. Beyer died in 2008.
John Neilson is himself a letter carver and the editor of the lettering journal Forum. The talk will present an overview of Beyer’s life and work, along with some reflections on what that work tells us about the nature of lettercarving as an art form.
Tickets for the lecture are £5.00. Advance booking essential either in person or by calling 01252 891450.
